Institute of Environmental Radioactivity (IER) regularly holds the IER seminar in which the faculty members report on their research results, with the aim of facilitating their research activities and promoting communication.

In the 3rd IER seminar of this fiscal year that was held on October 16, 2023, two master’s students majoring in Environmental Radioactivity made presentations in English on the progress of their respective research activities. They are going to have the final exam of master’s dissertation in coming February and the seminar was a sort of interim presentation to report their progress for it. The seminar was attended by 23 IER faculty members and students.

Mr. Yamaguchi from Wada Laboratory presented the results of the analysis conducted at the laboratory on the concentration of 137Cs and its seasonal variation in wild animal and plant samples collected in the difficult-to-return zone, as well as future issues based on the results.

Mr. Yanagigawa from Tsukada Laboratory presented the results of his analysis on the speciation of 137Cs in soil samples collected in June and July immediately after the 2011 nuclear power plant accident out of the vast amount of soil archive samples stored and managed at IER.

Following each presentation, the students received questions, comments, and advice regarding future research endeavors from their supervisors as well as researchers in various research fields. The direct advice from the experts across diverse disciplines appeared to serve as a significant motivation for the students in their journey toward completing their master’s thesis.
