On Tuesday, September 5th, 2023, President of Fukushima University MIURA Hiroki, IER Director NANBA Kenji, and Associate Professor TAKATA Hyoe held an online meeting with H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). In 2016, IAEA and IER signed Practical Arrangements (PAs) titled “Practical Arrangements between the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Institute of Environmental Radioactivity, Fukushima University (IER) on Environmental Monitoring and Management in Areas Affected by the Fukushima Accident”. These PAs were renewed in April 2023, under the title “Practical Arrangements between the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Institute of Environmental Radioactivity, Fukushima University (IER) on Cooperation in the Area of Environmental Monitoring and Management in Areas Affected by the Fukushima Accident.”

The meeting commenced with warm greetings from Director General Grossi, who extended his profound appreciation for the IER’s dedicated cooperation under the PAs. President Miura then conveyed his heartfelt gratitude for the ongoing research cooperation between IAEA and IER, and stated, “Given the current circumstances surrounding Fukushima, the IAEA’s investigations and information dissemination are critical to sustain local livelihoods and maintain peaceful relationships with other countries. We appreciate the IAEA’s continued monitoring and information dissemination in this regard.”

Subsequently, Director General Grossi engaged in a discussion on environmental radioactivity research with IER Director Nanba and others, reaffirming their commitment to further strengthen cooperation between both parties.
