Institute of Environmental Radioactivity (IER) regularly holds the IER Seminar in which the faculty members report on their research results, with the aim of facilitating their research activities and promoting communication.
In the 3rd IER Seminar of this fiscal year that was held on September 28, 2026, two presentations were given by Associate Professor WAKIYAMA Yoshifumi and Visiting Professor Mark ZHELEZNYAK to 27 participating researchers and students as follows.
Associate Professor Wakiyama presented a progress report on the research project mentioned above. Based on the results of water sample collection and analysis conducted in May and June 2026—as part of this project—in rivers within the Ukedo River system and on the seashore near the river mouth, he explained the concentrations of 137Cs and their fluctuations.
Visiting Professor Zheleznyak’s presentation reviewed the results of recent research on the use of experience in modeling radionuclide dispersion in watersheds, rivers, and coastal waters for the Decision Support System (DSS) JRODOS, developed since 1991, and for the new system HyMARIS. The development of HyMARIS is starting under a project funded by the National Research Foundation of Singapore, in which IER, Fukushima University, participates in a consortium bringing together the National University of Singapore, Deltares in the Netherlands, one of the world leaders in software development for water system modeling, and the Fukushima-based start-up company Nichiu Svit LLC, which combines Japanese and Ukrainian experts. The presentation also briefly overviewed the results of ongoing research by IER researchers and international experts on data-driven estimates of excess radiation-induced cancer mortality around accidental NPPs, as a basis for calculating evacuation reference levels for nuclear emergency decision support.
After each presentation, various questions and comments were raised by participants.
