Institute of Environmental Radioactivity (IER) regularly holds the IER Seminar in which the faculty members report on their research results, with the aim of facilitating their research activities and promoting communication.
In the 2nd IER Seminar of this fiscal year that was held on August 31, 2026, two presentations were given by Project Associate Professor Maksym GUSYEV and Professor TAKATA Hyoe to 26 participating researchers and students as follows.
Project Associate Professor Gusyev presented on his 10-year tritium in water (³HHO) research, ³HHO-tracer applications, and interactions with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). On August 2016, Dr. Gusyev was appointed as an IAEA Expert/Lecturer and Alternate National Project Coordinator of Japan and the presentation highlighted the increasing ³HHO’s role as a water-cycle tracer across Asia-Pacific in the IAEA international and national training courses. From October 2023, the IER joined the IAEA’s global precipitation monitoring network (GNIP) to collect monthly precipitation samples for natural and anthropogenic ³HHO analysis. He described his ³HHO transit-time modeling for the post-Fukushima Daiichi accident with ³HHO-enabled MIROC5-iso global atmospheric model, and the new IAEA project applying AI to isotope-enabled hydrological models. In addition, he indicated his contribution to the 16th IAEA Isotope Hydrology Symposium in 2023 with IAEA and New Zealand’s colleagues on ³HHO-tracer and introduced on the upcoming 17th IAEA Isotope Hydrology Symposium in 2027 with five ³HHO-related themes.
Professor Takata gave a presentation titled “Tritium in the Northwestern North Pacific.”
After each presentation, various questions and comments were raised by participants.
