The Institute of Environmental Radioactivity (IER) holds its Annual Symposium to report research findings to the public and experts, providing a forum for exchanging opinions. The 12th symposium, marking the 15th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, was held on March 10–11 under the theme “Fukushima Voices: 15 Years of Nature and Humanity.” The event was conducted in a hybrid format at CORASSE Fukushima (Fukushima City) and online, attracting a total of approximately 360 participants from Japan and overseas over the two days.

On Day 1, the event was held jointly with the Annual Meeting of the Environmental Radioactivity Research Network Center (ERAN), a Joint Usage/Research Center in which IER participates. The program featured special lectures for experts (in English), flash talks, and poster sessions. Day 2 included the Poster Presentations for Experts and the Symposium for the General Public (with simultaneous interpretation in English and Japanese). In the Symposium for the General Public, six researchers from diverse fields—including the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities—gave presentations. During the subsequent discussion, all presenters took the stage for a Q&A session and an exchange of ideas with the audience, which was held in a warm and friendly atmosphere. In addition, SUGENO Haruto and MASHIKO Atsushi (both 2nd-year master’s students majoring in Environmental Radioactivity) and ONO Tsukasa (Graduate School of Science and Technology, University of Tsukuba) received the “Student Award” for their excellent poster presentations.

Comments from the participant questionnaire included: “The social science perspective was new to me and very interesting,” “It was encouraging to see the wide range of research being conducted at our local university,” and “The themes were highly appropriate and relevant to the current state of reconstruction.” Thanks to these diverse insights and active participation, the symposium proved to be a truly meaningful and successful event.
