Lecture TitleRecent Topics in Health Physics and Radioecology

On November 10th, an IER special seminar by Prof. Thomas Johnson of CSU was held and attended by 25 IER graduate students and IER members.

Prof. Johnson delivered a lecture entitled “Recent Topics in Health Physics and Radioecology”, covering three topics. The first topic was about the springs located in the arid mountains of western Colorado. The springs seem to be an oasis for a wide variety of animals, as evidenced by the camera traps. However, the spring water may contain naturally occurring heavy metals and radionuclides. Moreover, since there is no tap water in the vicinity, and groundwater from the same aquifer as the springs is also used for drinking water by residents, this water needs to be monitored for its quality.

The second topic was the African rhinoceros. Although rhinoceros are protected animals, their horns are exported illegally. A proposed method to prevent this illegal act is to label the horns with Co-60. In this way, the illegally captured horns can be easily detected at customs.

The third topic was Prof. Johnson’s personal history, which provided a glimpse into the breadth of his research interests and the source of his passion for education.
