Lecture TitleKinetic evaluation for 137Cs desorption from riverine particles in seawater and exploring a sorbent agent for reducing desorbed fraction(Takata)
Variation of 137Cs activity concentration in flooded and pore water in paddy fields and its transference to rice(Tsukada)

Institute of Environmental Radioactivity (IER) regularly holds the IER seminar in which the faculty members report on their research results, with the aim of facilitating their research activities and promoting communication.

In the 2nd IER seminar of this fiscal year that was held on July 31, 2023, two presentations were given by Associate Professor, TAKATA Hyoe and Professor, TSUKADA Hirofumi, to 25 participating researchers and students.

Associate Professor Takata presented the results of estimating the speed of dissolution (desorption rate) of 137Cs sorbed on riverine suspended particles in seawater based on chemical kinetics. He also presented the results of his study on methods for reducing the desorbed fraction in seawater.

Professor Tsukada presented that the results from a five-year paddy field study from 2018 to 2022 showed that 137Cs concentrations increase with increasing ammonium concentrations in porewater, but at the same time K concentrations increase, which suppresses 137Cs absorption by rice plants.

After each presentation, various questions and comments were raised by IER faculty members and university students from the U.S. who had come to Japan for training.
