In some classes of the Master’s Program in Environmental Radioactivity, prominent researchers are invited as guest lecturers, and these classes are open to relevant professionals both within and outside the university as ‘Special Seminars’.
The lecture on ‘Nuclear Disaster Studies’ by Dr. Felipe Gallardo Cerón, held on May 15, was attended by 15 participants, including master’s and doctoral students majoring in Environmental Radioactivity and IER faculty and staff.
Dr. Gallardo Cerón introduced the UK nuclear energy status and described Windscale-Sellafield main facilities and nuclear products and wastes. He presented historical timeline of past nuclear accidents with their environmental impacts and decommissioning process of main facilities. For the current Windscale-Sellafield site, he demonstrated the on-going monitoring activities and nuclear waste management. He also demonstrated challenges in groundwater flow and radionuclide transport modeling based on his research findings. As a result, his presentation was followed by interesting discussion during the Q&A time.
