In the 6th IER seminar of this fiscal year that was held on November 25, 2024, two presentations were given by Project Researcher KANASASHI Tsutomu and Associate Professor HIRAO Shigekazu to 12 participating researchers and students as follows.
Project Researcher Kanasashi presented on the transfer of radiocesium contamination from forests to stream through ecosystems. He hypothesized that radiocesium contamination is influenced by litter, since the stream ecosystems rely on organic matter such as litter/fallen leaves that fall and accumulate in the stream from the forest. To test this, he fed caddisfly larvae of the aquatic insect the fallen leaves containing 137Cs and measured the 137Cs concentration in both the larvae and their excrement.
Associate Professor Hirao gave an overview of the newly developed tritium collection system for atmospheric vapor, which is portable and can be used for short time observations, and then presented the results of tests conducted under actual conditions.
After each presentation, various questions and comments were raised by IER faculty members and graduate students.
