2013.12.17 Members of IRSN and French science & technology journalists visited IER.

  • Members of French Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire (IRSN) and French journalists specializing in science and technology issues paid a visit to IER as part of their inspection tour of Japan.

  • The French party consists of 25 members.

  • At the opening of the exchange meeting, Dr. Jean-Christophe Gariel, Director in charge of the Environment Department of IRSN, expressed his satisfaction that they had a chance to visit IER on this tour, which plans to visit many places including Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and other related facilities as well as concerned authorities in a short period of time.
  • Prof. Takahashi, Director of IER, explained the overview of Fukushima Prefecture by showing the pictures of tourist spots and of different areas taken soon after the earthquake.
  • Prof. Nanba, Vice Director of IER, presented the current situation of contamination in Fukushima, using graphs and charts.
  • After their presentations, there was a question-and-answer session with the two professors. French journalists showed great interest in health effects of radiation exposure by keenly asking questions on food contamination and exposure dose of residents living near temporary storage spaces for contaminated soil stripped from ground, although IER does not directly engage in decontamination and radiation protection activities.
  • The meeting was only one and half hours long, but it was a precious occasion to further promote the partnership between IER and IRSN. Before leaving, Dr. Gariel gave us presents wrapped in Christmas-colored paper, which conveys French sense of beauty.
